Which insurance check do you actually need?

Two quick questions and we'll point you at the right service — askMID, the MIB, the police, or a history check.

Check vehicle insurance status online

How to check if a car is insured on askMID

The Motor Insurance Database (MID) is the UK's central record of insured vehicles, maintained by the Motor Insurers' Bureau. Every insurer is required to upload the policies it writes; the police, ANPR cameras and the DVLA all read from it. askMID is the public window onto that database, and checking your own vehicle is free.

  1. Open the MIB's free check

Go to the official "Check your vehicle" service on the MIB Navigate site (link below). It's run by the Motor Insurers' Bureau — not a commercial reseller — and costs nothing.

  2. Enter the registration

Type the number plate and confirm you are the registered keeper, or have the keeper's permission to check. That declaration is a legal requirement of the service.

  3. Read the result

askMID answers with one of two results: the vehicle is shown on the MID today, or it is not. It doesn't display the insurer, policy number, cover level or named drivers.

  4. Not showing? Don't panic yet

New and amended policies can take 24–48 hours to appear (insurers have up to seven days). Check the registration on your certificate matches, then chase your insurer to confirm the MID upload.

Why we link out rather than "checking it for you": live insurance status is held only on the MID and is only released through askMID. Any website that claims to show you a vehicle's insurance status from its own database is either relaying the askMID result or guessing. Motorscan doesn't guess — we send you to the source for the one fact only the MID holds, and show you everything else ourselves.

What askMID shows — and what it doesn't

askMID answers exactly one question: is there a live policy against this registration right now? Everything else about a vehicle's legal and insurance standing lives elsewhere. This is where a Motorscan check picks up.

askMID for your car, another car, or a car you're buying

People arrive at askMID for three very different reasons — and only one of them is what the free check is designed for.

bolt Free · Instant

"Is my car insured?"

Use the free askMID check for your own vehicle — after a new policy, a renewal, a plate change, or an Insurance Advisory Letter from the DVLA. It confirms your insurer has uploaded you to the MID.

✓ The check the free service is built for
car_crash After an accident

"Was the other driver insured?"

askMID's paid Other Vehicle Look-up tells you whether the other vehicle was on the MID and names the insurer, so you can pursue a claim. If it wasn't insured, the MIB's uninsured-driver scheme is the route to compensation.

✓ Small fee · accident circumstances only
shopping_cart Buying a car

"Is the car I'm viewing insured?"

You can't askMID a seller's car — and it wouldn't help, because their policy ends when you buy. What matters is whether it's been written off, stolen, clocked or financed. Run the Motorscan check above before you pay.

Insurance check on GOV.UK?

Why the DVLA can't tell you if a car is insured

A lot of people search for a government insurance check and land on GOV.UK, which only shows tax and MOT. That's not a gap in the service — it's how the data is split. Three bodies hold three different records:

account_balance DVLA · GOV.UK

Tax, SORN, MOT status, vehicle details

The DVLA keeps the vehicle register: who the keeper is, whether it's taxed or SORN'd, and the make, model, colour and engine. It reads the MID for enforcement but never publishes insurance status.

What happens if a vehicle isn't on the MID

Since 2011 the DVLA has cross-matched its vehicle register against the Motor Insurance Database. A vehicle that is registered, not SORN'd and not on the MID is flagged automatically — no police stop required.

Step 1 — Insurance Advisory Letter (IAL)

The keeper receives a letter warning the vehicle appears to be uninsured, and is given a short window to insure it, declare SORN, or show the MID record is wrong.

Step 2 — £100 fixed penalty

If nothing changes, a £100 fixed penalty notice follows (reduced if paid promptly). Ignoring it can lead to court and a fine of up to £1,000.

Step 3 — Clamping, impounding, disposal

A persistently uninsured vehicle can be clamped, impounded and ultimately disposed of, with release fees on top of the penalty.

Caught driving uninsured

Separate from CIE: a roadside stop or ANPR hit on an uninsured vehicle means a £300 fixed penalty, 6 penalty points, and the police can seize the car on the spot. In court the fine is unlimited and disqualification is possible. A conviction (IN10) also pushes premiums up for years.

Exempt if SORN'd: a vehicle with a valid Statutory Off Road Notification doesn't need insurance under CIE — but it can't be driven or parked on a public road. A Motorscan free check shows whether a vehicle is currently taxed or SORN'd, so you can see which side of that line it's on.
How it works

Check everything askMID doesn't — free, by reg

Pair the official insurance check with the vehicle's legal and history record.

  1. Enter the registration

Type any UK number plate into the search box above — no sign-up, no card, and you can do it from the advert or the roadside.

  2. See tax, SORN & MOT

The free report shows current tax and SORN status, MOT expiry and the full MOT history with recorded mileage and advisories.

  3. Check the insurance group

The ABI insurance group (1–50) is shown free — useful before you buy, or before you renew a policy on a car you're not sure about.

  4. Unlock write-off, stolen & finance

The full check queries the insurers' MIAFTR write-off register, the police and insurer stolen registers and the finance houses — the insurance history that does follow the car.

askMID FAQ

Checking a vehicle's insurance — frequently asked questions

arrow_forward_ios What is askMID?

askMID is the public enquiry service for the Motor Insurance Database (MID) — the central UK record of every insured vehicle, run by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB). Insurers upload every policy they write to the MID, and the police, the DVLA and ANPR cameras use it to identify uninsured vehicles. askMID lets you query the same database: a free check on your own vehicle, and a paid look-up of another vehicle after an accident.

Yes — if it's your own vehicle, or you have the keeper's permission. The askMID 'Check your vehicle' service on the MIB's site is free and tells you instantly whether the registration is on the Motor Insurance Database. For a vehicle that isn't yours, the only route is askMID's paid look-up after a road accident; there's no general public insurance check on other people's cars.

Three steps: open the free askMID vehicle check (linked below), enter the registration and confirm you're the keeper or have permission, and read the result — 'showing on the MID' or 'not showing'. It takes under a minute and needs no account. If the answer surprises you, remember new policies can take up to seven days to appear.

The DVLA doesn't offer an insurance check at all — free or paid. GOV.UK's vehicle enquiry shows tax and MOT status only; insurance is held on the Motor Insurance Database, run by the Motor Insurers' Bureau, and checked through askMID (free for your own vehicle). The confusion is understandable: the DVLA reads the MID to enforce Continuous Insurance Enforcement, but it doesn't publish it. For the DVLA side — tax, SORN, MOT and vehicle details — use our DVLA check.

Use the free askMID 'Check your vehicle' service on the MIB's Navigate site. Enter the registration, confirm you're the keeper or have permission, and it tells you whether the vehicle appears on the Motor Insurance Database today. It doesn't show the insurer, policy number or named drivers — only whether there is a live policy recorded against the registration.

Only in limited circumstances. After a road traffic accident you can use askMID's paid 'Other Vehicle Look-up' to find out whether the other vehicle was insured and which insurer covers it, so you can make a claim. You can't run a casual insurance check on a neighbour's car or a car you're thinking of buying — the MID isn't open for general enquiries about other people's vehicles. If you suspect a vehicle is being driven uninsured, report it to the police.

Checking your own vehicle is free. The 'Other Vehicle Look-up' used after an accident carries a small fee (a few pounds), payable by card. Be wary of third-party sites that charge for an 'askMID check' — they're either reselling the free service or not checking the MID at all.

Most policies appear within 24–48 hours of being set up, though insurers are allowed up to seven days to update the Motor Insurance Database. If your new policy isn't showing after a couple of days, contact your insurer or broker and ask them to confirm the MID upload. In the meantime, keep your policy documents to hand — they're your proof of insurance if you're stopped. We've covered the timings in detail in our guide to how long askMID takes to update.

First check you entered the registration correctly and that the policy is live (not starting tomorrow). Then contact the insurer — the usual causes are a delay in uploading the policy, a typo in the registration on the policy, or a change of registration (private plate) that hasn't been passed on. Ask them to correct the MID record; you can re-check askMID a day or two later. Until it's fixed, carry your certificate of insurance when you drive.

Under Continuous Insurance Enforcement the DVLA compares its vehicle register against the MID. If your car is taxed and not declared off-road (SORN) but shows no insurance, you'll receive an Insurance Advisory Letter, then a £100 fixed penalty if it stays uninsured, and the vehicle can be clamped, impounded or destroyed. Separately, if you're caught driving uninsured the police can issue a £300 fixed penalty and 6 points, seize the vehicle on the spot, and the case can go to court with an unlimited fine and disqualification.

If you declare SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) with the DVLA, the vehicle is exempt from Continuous Insurance Enforcement and you don't need a policy. If it isn't SORN'd it must be insured — even if it's parked on a driveway and never driven. A Motorscan free check shows the vehicle's current tax and SORN status.

No — no commercial vehicle check can. Live insurance status is held only on the Motor Insurance Database, and it's only released through askMID. What a Motorscan check does show is everything around it: whether the car is taxed or SORN'd, its MOT status and history, its insurance group, and in the full check whether it has ever been recorded as an insurance write-off, reported stolen, or has outstanding finance.

You can't see past policies, but you can see the things insurance history leaves behind. A Motorscan full check queries the insurers' own write-off register (MIAFTR), so you'll know if the car has ever been a Cat A, B, S or N total loss — and a theft check against the police and insurance records. Those are the insurance facts that affect the price and your ability to insure it; the seller's current cover doesn't transfer to you anyway.
