The maths behind the estimate
The base figure is the median fully comprehensive premium for your region and age band from the Quotezone Car Insurance Price Index (Q2 2026 — Median of fully comprehensive quotes across 100,000+ UK car insurance policies, March 2025 – June 2026). That median describes the typical car; your car's ABI insurance group (1–50) then scales it on a curve calibrated so a group-1 car sits roughly 28% below the median and a group-50 car roughly 65% above it. The optional refinements adjust from there: no-claims bonus works relative to what's typical for your age band (the medians already contain each band's usual bonus, so only being unusually above or below it moves the number — a typical insurer scale runs to roughly 50% off at 9+ years); street parking adds ~12% and a locked garage trims ~6%; paying monthly adds ~18% (instalment interest); a recent fault claim ~15% and points or a conviction ~30%, in line with published market comparisons. The ±18% band around the result covers what the tool still doesn't ask. Premium data updates quarterly (next: October 2026); the insurance group comes from the same vehicle data as a Motorscan car check.

How does the estimator work out my premium?
Three real inputs: your region and age band select the matching median premium from the Quotezone Car Insurance Price Index (Q2 2026, 100,000+ fully comprehensive policies), and your car's ABI insurance group — fetched automatically from its reg — scales that figure up or down. A group 5 city car prices well below the regional median; a group 45 performance car well above. The output is a range because everything else about you (claims history, mileage, exact postcode, occupation) still matters.
Is this a quote?
No — it's a statistical estimate of what drivers like you typically pay, useful for budgeting before you buy a car or renew. Real quotes depend on your full details and vary a lot between insurers, which is precisely why comparing 130+ of them (the button under your estimate) is worth five minutes.

Why does my no-claims bonus barely change the estimate?
Because the market medians the estimator is built on already include the bonus most drivers your age have. A 45–64 median is dominated by drivers with maximum no-claims discount — so telling us you have 9 years doesn't move the number much, but telling us you have none moves it a lot (that's genuinely unusual for the band, and insurers price it that way). Young drivers see the reverse: any bonus at all is better than the band's typical one year, so it pulls the estimate down.
How accurate is the estimate?
It's honest about being approximate: the ±18% range covers the spread we'd expect from factors the tool doesn't ask about. Your real quotes can still land outside it — a recent fault claim, points, or a city-centre postcode push up; maximum no-claims bonus and a driveway pull down. Treat it as the right ballpark, not the right number.
