Black Box Car Insurance
A black box policy prices you on how you actually drive, not just who you are on paper. For new and young drivers it's frequently the cheapest cover available — if you can live with being scored. Here's exactly how it works, what the box records, and when it's the wrong choice.

For careful young drivers
Biggest at 17–19, with further discounts at renewal for a good score. The gap to standard cover has narrowed as premiums fell — always quote both.
Core inputs
Speed, braking/acceleration, time of day, and mileage — combined into a driving score.
Mostly gone
Hard night-time bans are largely history; late-night miles just score lower.
Usually free
Fitted box, self-fit plug-in, or app-only — most insurers include it in the premium.
What the black box actually records
Whether it's a fitted box, a plug-in device or just your phone, the data collected is broadly the same.
Speed vs the road
Not your absolute speed — your speed relative to the limit of the road you're on. Persistent low-level speeding is the score-killer most drivers don't notice.
Braking & acceleration
Harsh braking and hard acceleration read as tailgating and impatience. Smooth inputs score well — it's the easiest habit to fix.
Time of day
Miles between roughly 11pm and 5am score lower because that's when serious young-driver crashes cluster. Occasional late trips are fine; nightly ones aren't.
Mileage
Policies come with an annual mileage allowance. Exceed it and you'll be asked to top up — ignore that and the policy can be cancelled.
Who black box suits — and who it doesn't
Telematics is a trade: data for money. It's a good trade for some drivers and a bad one for others.
17–21, low mileage, mostly daytime
The classic case: new licence, short local trips, car parked at home overnight. The discount is at its largest and the restrictions barely bite.
Returning drivers & conviction rebuilds
No recent NCB, a gap in driving, or points on the licence — a telematics score is a way to prove you're a better risk than your paperwork says.
Night-shift workers & high milers
If your miles are mostly at 2am or you do 15,000+ a year, the scoring works against you and mileage top-ups erode the saving. A standard policy usually wins.
Multiple drivers, one car
The box can't tell who's driving. One heavy-footed named driver drags the score — and the renewal price — for everyone.
The clauses to read before you buy
Telematics policies are policed by their own data. These are the terms that catch people out.
Fitting window
Fitted and self-install boxes must be active within a set window (often 7–14 days of the start date). Miss it and the policy can be cancelled — a cancellation you must declare on every future quote.
Score floors
Most insurers can raise the premium mid-term or refuse renewal if the score stays poor. Persistent harsh events and speeding aren't just discount-killers — they can end the policy.
Mileage top-ups
Running out of miles doesn't stop the cover instantly, but ignoring top-up requests does. Buy more miles the moment the app warns you.
Tampering
Unplugging, blocking or interfering with the device is treated as fraud. Policies are voided and the cancellation follows you for years of loaded premiums.

Black Box Car Insurance — frequently asked questions
How much does black box insurance save?
For young drivers the initial discount is typically 20–40% against a comparable standard policy, with further reductions at renewal for a good score. The only way to know your number is to quote both — the comparison above returns telematics and standard prices side by side.
Does a black box have a curfew?
Mostly not any more. Hard night-time driving bans were common a decade ago; modern policies instead score late-night miles (roughly 11pm–5am) lower. Occasional late journeys are fine — a nightly pattern will hurt the score and the renewal price.
Can the black box be used against me in a claim?
Yes. The recorded speed, location and impact data will be checked against your account of any incident. That cuts both ways — it also proves it when the other driver was at fault, and boxes regularly recover stolen cars.
Fitted box, plug-in or app — does it matter?
Fitted boxes are the most accurate and enable theft tracking; plug-in (OBD) devices are close; app-only policies are the easiest but score phone-handling too and drain battery. Pricing differences are small — pick on convenience and read how each insurer scores.
What happens when I want to leave a telematics policy?
Nothing unusual — the no-claims bonus you build on a black box policy is normal NCB, fully transferable to any standard policy. Many drivers run telematics for one or two years at 17–19, bank the NCB and score history, then switch to conventional cover.
Does a black box damage the car or affect its warranty?
No. Fitted boxes are professionally installed to the 12V system and leave no lasting mark; self-fit devices plug into the OBD port or stick to the windscreen; app-only policies touch nothing at all. None of them void a manufacturer warranty, and removal at the end of the policy is routine — the insurer arranges it for fitted units.
