Did You Know Your Job Title Could Impact Your Car Insurance Costs?

December 2, 2024 by Zoe Hicks – 1 min read

Your job title could be costing you hundreds on car insurance. A new analysis from Quotezone shows that certain professions, such as warehouse workers and healthcare assistants, are deemed high-risk by insurers, resulting in inflated premiums. However, small adjustments to your job title—while remaining factually accurate—could help lower costs. Despite the potential savings, many drivers remain unaware of the impact their job title has on their premium or the risks of inaccuracies.

Car insurance premiums aren’t just influenced by your driving record or the type of car you drive—your job title can significantly affect how much you pay. New research from Quotezone reveals that certain professions are consistently marked as high-risk by insurers, leading to much higher premiums for individuals in these roles.

The analysis highlights how specific jobs carry the steepest insurance costs, while even slight but accurate adjustments to a job title could lower premiums. However, many drivers remain unaware of this, and inaccuracies in job descriptions could invalidate their cover altogether.

For example, warehouse workers, healthcare assistants, and chefs face some of the highest premiums, with warehouse workers paying an average of £1,371.67 per year—39% above the national average. In contrast, safer occupations like civil servants and retirees enjoy significantly lower premiums. Retired drivers, for instance, pay just £492.08 annually, which is 50% below the national figure.

Quotezone’s insurance experts note that the specific wording of a job title can also impact premium costs. Small adjustments—while still accurately reflecting one’s role—can lead to reduced rates. However, it’s crucial that job titles remain truthful, as inaccuracies could void the policy and leave drivers without protection.

Despite this potential for savings, a recent Quotezone survey found that many drivers are unaware of the link between job titles and premiums. A quarter (24%) of respondents didn’t know their job title could affect the price, and 61% had never explored different variations to secure a lower rate. Of those who did experiment, 61% succeeded in finding savings.

Alarmingly, 31% of respondents were unaware that an inaccurate job title could invalidate their policy, putting them at risk of uncovered claims.

These findings underscore the need for accuracy and awareness when declaring job information to insurers. Understanding how occupation influences premiums, and making small, truthful adjustments, could save drivers money while ensuring they stay fully covered.
