Keep it cheap, keep it valid

The over-65 checklist

The pricing looks after itself at this band. What needs attention is the paperwork that keeps the cover valid.

Renew the licence at 70 — and every 3 years after

The DVLA writes to you before your 70th birthday; renewal is free and takes minutes online. An expired licence means no valid insurance — set the reminder now, not at 69¾.

Declare notifiable medical conditions

Certain conditions and medications must be reported to the DVLA — and your insurer. Undeclared notifiable conditions are one of the few things that void an over-65's otherwise bulletproof cover. If in doubt, the DVLA's "check if a health condition affects your driving" service settles it.

Update mileage — it's probably fallen

Retirement mileage is often half of working mileage, and "social, domestic and pleasure" is a cheaper use class than commuting. Stale answers from your working years cost money every renewal.

Compare — including specialists from ~75

The mainstream market is sharpest for 65–75. Later, some insurers taper while age-specialists (with unlimited-age policies) compete hard. A yearly comparison catches the crossover.

Car Insurance for Over 65s — frequently asked questions

arrow_forward_ios How much is car insurance for over 65s?

The 65+ band averages £431.48 a year (Q2 2026, fully comprehensive median) — the cheapest of all age bands, ranging from £339.37 in Wales to £583.40 in London. Maximum no-claims bonus and low retirement mileage push individual quotes lower still.

No — there's no retest at any age. At 70 the licence simply switches to a 3-year renewal cycle: a free self-declaration (including eyesight and medical fitness) done online or by post. Insurance stays normal as long as the licence stays current and declarations stay honest.

Premiums stay at their floor through the 60s and early 70s, then rise gently as claims frequency ticks up — noticeably from the late 70s. Some mainstream insurers stop quoting around 80+, but specialist over-70s/over-80s insurers keep prices competitive; comparison just matters more again.

Rarely. Most DVLA-notifiable conditions, properly declared and licensed, make little or no difference to mainstream premiums. What causes real problems is non-declaration — which can void the policy entirely. Declare to the DVLA, tell the insurer, keep driving.
