Can you tax a car without insurance?
The most-asked crossover question — and the answer depends on which side of the Irish Sea you're standing.
Yes — tax doesn't check insurance
The DVLA's online tax system doesn't verify insurance in Great Britain. But taxing an uninsured car doesn't make it legal: Continuous Insurance Enforcement separately flags any taxed, un-SORN'd, uninsured car — parked or not — for a warning letter, then a £100 penalty.
No — insurance is checked
In NI, valid insurance is verified when you tax the vehicle. No live policy on the MID, no tax. Temporary insurance counts, provided it's active on the day you tax.
SORN — off the road, off the hook
A Statutory Off Road Notification (free, instant, cancels remaining tax) removes both requirements while the car stays on private land. Un-SORN by taxing and insuring before it touches a public road again.

How do I check if my car is insured?
Run the free askMID check — the public window onto the Motor Insurance Database, which every insurer feeds. Enter the reg, confirm you're the keeper or have permission, and it answers yes or no on the spot. New policies can take 24–48 hours to appear, so don't panic the day after buying cover.
Can you tax a car without insurance?
In England, Scotland and Wales, yes — the tax transaction doesn't check insurance. In Northern Ireland, no — insurance is verified when taxing. Either way a taxed-but-uninsured car isn't legal to keep on a public road: Continuous Insurance Enforcement catches it without the car ever moving.
Can you tax a car with temporary insurance?
Yes. Tax and insurance are separate systems in GB (no check happens at all), and in NI a live temporary policy on the MID satisfies the check. A one-day temp policy covering collection day handles both the drive home and the taxing.
Can I check if someone else's car is insured?
Only in two cases: with the keeper's permission (the free askMID check), or after a road accident via askMID's paid Other Vehicle Look-up, which also names their insurer for your claim. There's deliberately no public browse of other people's cover — if you suspect an uninsured driver, report the reg to the police, who read the MID directly.
Do I need insurance if my car is SORN'd?
No — a SORN'd car kept on private land needs neither insurance nor tax, and Continuous Insurance Enforcement exempts it. The moment it returns to a public road it needs both again. A free reg check shows any car's current tax and SORN status.
