IN10 · DRIVING WITHOUT INSURANCE

IN10: Insurance After Driving Uninsured

An IN10 — using a vehicle uninsured — carries a bitter irony: the conviction for not having insurance makes insurance itself cost 50–100% more for the next five years, and some insurers simply decline. Many IN10s are collected innocently — a lapsed direct debit, a "driving other cars" myth — which changes nothing about the loading, but everything about how avoidable the next one is.

How people collect an IN10 without meaning to

A cancelled direct debit lapsing the policy silently; assuming a comprehensive policy allows "driving other cars" when the certificate says otherwise; a fronting arrangement unravelling; a voided policy backdating you to uninsured. The conviction doesn't distinguish careless from calculated — the prevention is reading your certificate and keeping the MID-checkable status current on your own car.

Insurers price it as a trust problem

To an underwriter an IN10 isn't about driving skill — it says the legal basics weren't maintained. That's why the loading (+50–100%) outstrips a speeding code despite identical points counts, and why declining is common. The specialists price it more coolly.

Rebuilding is the same playbook, faster

Unlike a DR10 there's no ban to serve — you can start rebuilding immediately: continuous cover in your own name (gaps look terrible after an IN10), a low-group car, telematics if the price helps, and five clean years until the declaration window closes.

Check your own car's status today

The free askMID check confirms whether your car shows as insured on the Motor Insurance Database — the same database ANPR reads. After an IN10, making that check a habit at every renewal is the cheapest insurance there is. Our askMID guide covers it.

IN10: Insurance After Driving Uninsured — frequently asked questions

arrow_forward_ios How much does an IN10 increase car insurance?

Typically 50–100% or more for the five-year declaration period, and a portion of mainstream insurers decline IN10 holders entirely. The spread between insurers who'll take it is unusually wide, which makes comparing — including convicted-driver specialists — worth more here than for almost any other code.

Four years from the offence date on the licence itself; five years from conviction for insurer declarations (the standard question window). After five years it stops affecting quotes.

Yes — plenty of insurers quote IN10 holders, with loading, and the specialist market covers the rest. Being declined by one or two mainstream brands is normal and doesn't mean you're uninsurable; it means the comparison matters more.

It can in court (special reasons occasionally avoid points where a driver genuinely and reasonably believed they were covered), but once an IN10 is on your record, insurers price the code, not the story. Prevention is the practical lesson: check askMID after every policy change and never rely on assumed "driving other cars" cover.

A second IN10 within the declaration window compounds badly: court rather than fixed penalty is likelier, totting-up disqualification comes into play (12+ points), and the insurable market narrows to specialists at serious prices. The five clean years after the first one are worth protecting.
