What's included with learner driver insurance?
The extent of coverage will depend on the type of policy you decide to take out. Insurance providers will also vary what they offer, so before committing, reading the policy documents thoroughly and ensuring you get the right cover is essential. A traditional twelve-month policy will typically offer three types of insurance:
- Third-party – this is the minimum legal requirement and offers basic cover for any damage you cause to another person's vehicle and property, including any injuries they may sustain. However, it doesn't provide any protection for losses incurred to your own car or any injuries you may incur.
- Third-party, fire and theft – this level of cover includes everything third-party insurance comprises, with the additional benefit of protection against theft and fire. For example, you'll be protected if your car is damaged by attempted theft or fire, or is stolen.
- Fully comprehensive insurance – this is the top-of-the-line policy, providing you with cover for third party, fire and theft, with the addition of coverage for damage caused to your own vehicle and injuries sustained by you during any collision.
And, if you decide that a more flexible, temporary insurance cover for a few days, weeks or months is better suited for you, typically, these will offer fully comprehensive cover as standard.
